Grammy winners, The Manhattan Transfer are coming to The Pullo Center
Filed Under: Concerts | 3 Comments »
The Pullo Center at Penn State York welcomes Grammy award winners, The Manhattan Transfer to its stage on Sunday, December 16, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $75 and $55 and go on sale Monday, April 30, at 10:00 a.m. Pullo Center members can order April 23. Tickets can be purchased at the Pullo Center Box Office, charge by phone at 717-505-8900, or online at ThePulloCenter.com.
It’s been nearly forty years since Tim Hauser, a former Madison Avenue marketing executive, paid his bills by driving a New York City cab while aspiring to form a harmony vocal quartet sui generis that could authentically embrace varied musical styles, and still create something wholly unique in the field of American popular song.
In 1974 the group began performing regularly throughout New York City at Trude Hellers, Mercer Arts Center, Max’s Kansas City, Club 82, and other cutting edge cabaret venues. By the end of the year they were the number one live attraction in New York City, prompting Newsweek to send a writer to their show at Reno Sweeney’s in Greenwich Village to report on this growing phenomenon.
Signed to Atlantic Records, the group released their self-titled debut in 1975; the second single from the album, a remake of the Friendly Brothers gospel classic “Operator”, gave the group their first national hit. “Operator” took radio stations by storm, from the opening four-part a cappella intro to Siegel’s emotional lead vocal, eventually peaking in the Top 20. Their next two albums, Coming Out and Pastiche, brought them a string of Top 10 hits in Europe and produced a #1 smash in Britain and France with “Chanson d’ Amour”.
The first album featuring the now legendary quartet of Hauser, Siegel, Paul & Bentyne was 1979′s Extensions which earned the band another smash with “Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone”.
The group went from strength to strength, when in 1981, they became the first group ever to win Grammy Awards in both Pop and Jazz categories in the same year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “Boy From New York City”, and Best Jazz Performance, Duo or Group for “Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)”, both from their fifth studio long player, Mecca for Moderns.
In 1982 and 1983 the group won consecutive Grammy Awards in the Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group category for, respectively, “Route 66? and “Why Not!” The critical praise and commercial success of the groups first seven studio albums could hardly have prepared them for the monumental 12 Grammy nominations they received in 1985 for the album Vocalese.
Heading into the new millennium, with worldwide sales in the millions, Grammy Awards by the dozen, and as veterans of sold-out world tours, The Manhattan Transfer once again proved their uncanny knack for being ahead of the times by teaming up with the then relatively unknown, but future Grammy Award winning producer, Craig Street to record their tribute to the music of Louis Armstrong (The Spirit Of St. Louis).

Switchfoot is Coming to The Pullo Center
The Pullo Center at Penn State York welcomes Switchfoot, with special guest, Company of Thieves to its stage on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $50 and $36 and they will go on sale February 21, at 10:00 a.m. Pullo Center Members can order now. Tickets can be purchased at the Pullo Center Box Office, charge by phone at 717-505-8900, or online at ThePulloCenter.com.
The San Diego band first formed in 1996 when Jon Foreman and his brother Tim put the group together. Drummer, Chad Butler says the band members were all friends from their days together at high school. At the time, the San Diego indie rock scene was thriving as bands such as Rocket from the Crypt and Drive Like Jehu had just started to gain national attention. After early successes in the Christian rock scene, Switchfoot first gained mainstream recognition with songs like “Meant to Live”, and “Dare You to Move”.
“We love music and playing together,” Butler says. We thrive on the communal aspect of song and the stories that are invested within. We’ve been through a lot together… Incredible, wonderful moments and also really destructive, painful moments. You can feel that weight in some of the songs. It’s an incredible dream-come-true to say, ‘It’s time for a new Switchfoot record’ and to be able to go into the studio and make the album exactly how we want to make it.”
With its play on words, Vice Verses, the title of Switchfoot’s new album, coherently suggests the album’s theme: everything has two sides. “Every blessing comes with a set of curses,” singer-guitarist Jon Foreman sings on the title track, all the while wondering if “there’s a meaning to it all.” That theme runs through the album’s 12 songs and is even reflected in the album’s black and white cover.

Grammy winner, Jonny Lang is coming to The Pullo Center
Filed Under: Concerts | 22 Comments »
The Pullo Center at Penn State York welcomes Grammy award winner, Jonny Lang to its stage on Friday, May 18, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $52 and $39 and go on sale Friday, February 10, at 10:00 a.m. Pullo Center members can order now. Tickets can be purchased at the Pullo Center Box Office, charge by phone at 717-505-8900, or online at ThePulloCenter.com.
A professional musician since age 12, Lang rocketed from his hometown of Fargo, North Dakota, to international renown in his mid teens. While kids his age were still playing high school gigs, he was touring with giants like the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, trading licks with mentors like B. B. King and Buddy Guy, and being lauded by U.S. News and World Report for having “the voice of a grizzled blues veteran … and guitar skills to match.”
The Grammy winning, former prodigy instrumentalist, who topped the Billboard New Artist chart with his first album at age 15, stands now as a mature creative force, made more sensitive, yet also toughened by life’s adventures. He’s learned what it means to rise above hard times and to find meaning where chaos seemed to rule.
Lang’s new album, Turn Around, proves that unlike many one-time wonderkid performers, Jonny Lang has grown to exceed the expectations that heralded his ascendance. Produced by Ron Fair (Black Eyed Peas, Mary J. Blige, Counting Crows), energized through collaboration with songwriter/performers Drew Ramsey and Shannon Sanders, anchored and elevated by former Prince NPG rhythm dynamo Michael Bland, Turn Around is Lang’s fifth album – but it’s also the first of what will become his most moving and enduring works.

Theresa Caputo was born and raised on Long Island in Hicksville, NY. She has been married to her husband Larry for 22 years and has two children, Larry and Victoria. Theresa has been a practicing medium for 10 years and is a certified medium with the Forever-Family Foundation – an organization dedicated to connecting science with the afterlife. Theresa describes the process of receiving information as “feeling” spirits. She sees shadows and hears voices, but the overwhelming process is the sensory feeling and presence of those wishing to get messages across. Those who have witnessed her readings will attest to her “rapid fire” style and the abundance of significant evidence and messages. In seven short years of practicing mediumship professionally, Theresa has earned an extensive following in the New York area. With a two year waiting list, Theresa’s clients are holding on to every glimpse of hope for a cancellation just so she can read them sooner. It doesn’t matter where she is or who she is with, Theresa Caputo is likely to be helping someone through her psychic ability. She is so undeniably good at her craft that skeptics become believers and believers are in total disbelief.
Theresa’s unbelievable talent earned her a weekly television show, TLC’s Long Island Medium. The show follows Theresa as she takes clients on an emotional and spiritual journey with the afterlife. As a psychic medium, Theresa has an ability that most people can’t comprehend. She spends her days helping individuals find closure and connects people to their loved ones who have passed in order to validate that they are still with them. For Theresa, this is not just her job, this is her life, as she tries to balance the past with the present on a daily basis.

The Capitol Steps Put the Mock in Democracy at The Pullo Center
Filed Under: Comedy | 0 Comments
The Pullo Center at Penn State York welcomes The Capitol Steps to its stage on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $47 and $36 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased at the Pullo Center Box Office, charge by phone at 717-505-8900, or purchased online.
Thirty years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.
Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, Desperate Housemembers and their special holiday release, Barackin’ Around the Christmas Tree. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.
The Capitol Steps were born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Ronald Reagan was President when the Steps began, so co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become politicians, then politicians could become entertainers! Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin! So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor that was as popular in Peoria as it was on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Most cast members have worked on Capitol Hill; some for Democrats, some for Republicans, and others for politicians who firmly straddle the fence. No matter who holds office, there’s never a shortage of material. Says Elaina Newport, “Typically the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That’s what we call the two-party system.”
The material is updated constantly. Current examples include the Tea Party’s colorful invasion into the political spectrum (“Fun Fun Fun ’til Obama Takes Our Tea Bags Away”) and the Democrats’ plan to defeat the deficit (“Return to Spenders”). In addition, we offer our own take on such trending topics as the T.S.A. pat downs, Facebook and illegal immigration according to Arizonians! No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy!

Since 1995, Blue October has been a refuge for its members and fans worldwide. They’ve had high-profile film and TV placements on The Sopranos, Saw III, and NCIS to name a few. Justin was also featured in a unique tour alongside Twilight author Stephanie Meyer in 2008. Plus, they’ve played to fans in nearly every corner of the world. However, it all simply set the stage for their newly released album, Any Man in America.
An unexpected and unsettling personal shift sparked the music that would become Any Man in America. Singer Justin Furstenfeld found himself mired in the end of a marriage and a tenuous custody battle that consumed him to the breaking point. Instead of falling further, he turned to the studio and began documenting moments in his life in 2008 as the band was working on their last offering, Approaching Normal.
