Gamut Theatre Company presents Hamlet
Wed. Nov 5, 2014 at 10:00 am
“What a piece of work is a man…” Gamut Theatre, the combined theatre of Harrisburg Shakespeare Company and Popcorn Hat Players Children’s Theatre, presents its highly acclaimed educational outreach production of Hamlet. One of the most powerful and influential tragedies in the English language, Hamlet contemplates the age-old question: “To be, or not to be?” The play also explores the difference between what an individual seems to be versus what he or she really is.
Recommended for ages 12 and up, the production is extremely accessible, employing Gamut’s unique educational outreach style of combining Shakespeare’s original text with modern “narrations” to bridge the most famous scenes from the play together into an easy-to-understand story. This dynamic show is performed by five highly–talented actors, runs 80 minutes, and each performance is followed by a talk-back discussion with the audience.
Gamut theatre offers FREE workshops prior to the performance for students to learn more about the play and about putting together a performance! Workshops are available on Wednesday 10/22, Thursday 10/23, Friday 10/24, and Tuesday 11/4. If you are interested in a workshop, please contact Gamut’s Melissa Nicholson directly at Melissa@GamutTheatre.org or 717-215-6186.
Everything is FREE, but we do require reservations for the show no later than Monday, October 27. No exceptions! You may contact the Pullo Center Box Office at 717-505-8900 for more information or to make your reservation. We suggest calling as early as possible, as last year, we filled the Pullo quickly!

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes

“I've always wanted to be a Juke…and I still do .” (Jon Bon Jovi) “There's one thing I've always wanted to do,” Southside Johnny confesses, “and that is to sing.” And he has been doing just that for over a third of a century.
In a business where success is defined as getting a second single and longevity measured in nano-seconds, just surviving for thirty-plus years is a rare accomplishment. But Johnny and the Jukes have not just survived, they have flourished: over thirty albums, several EPs and a box set; thousands of live performances around the globe; a legion of dedicated and enthusiastic fans; dozens of classic songs; a record— HEARTS OF STONE —that Rolling Stone called one of the "top 100 albums of the 70's and 80's"; and the story continues as the band releases its newest studio album, PILLS AND AMMO, full of new material that is already getting rave reviews from fans.
Southside (so nicknamed because of his bent toward the Blues sounds of the Southside of Chicago) and his band, eventually called the Asbury Jukes, worked on growing their reputation as a dynamic live band through the late 60's and early70's. "We built a big band, a home for lots of musicians, horns and all: sure we called it Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, but it was really just a bunch of guys getting crazy on stage." Then, in 1975, they signed with CBS/Epic Records, released the critically acclaimed I DON'T WANT TO GO HOME, and a legend was begun. What followed has been over three decades of recording and touring and solidifying a place in rock 'n roll history.

An Unpredictable Evening with Todd Rundgren
Sun. Nov 9, 2014 at 7:30 pm
A Wizard, A True Star. The title of Todd Rundgren's 1973 solo album aptly sums up the contributions of this multi-faceted artist to state-of-the-art music. As a songwriter, video pioneer, producer, recording artist, computer software developer, conceptualist, and, most recently, interactive artist (re-designated TR-i), Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front The Nazz, the quintessential `60's cult group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the legendary Runt. But it was 1972's seminal Something/Anything?, on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him 'Rock's New Wunderkind'. It was followed by such landmark LPs as The Hermit of Mink Hollow and the above mentioned A Wizard, A True Star, as well as such hit singles as I Saw The Light, Hello It's Me, Can We Still Be Friends, and Bang The Drum.
In 1974, Todd formed Utopia, an entirely new approach to the concept of interactive musicianship, and embarked on an extensive round of touring and recording. Standout Utopia offerings included Oops! Wrong Planet, Adventures in Utopia, and Oblivion. Along the way, Utopia combined technical virtuosity and creative passion to create music that, for millions, defined the term "progressive rock."
Rundgren's myriad production projects include albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall And Oates. Rounding out his reputation as rock's Renaissance Man, Rundgren composed all the music and lyrics for Joe Papp's 1989 Off- Broadway production of Joe Orton's Up Against It (the screenplay commisioned by The Beatles for what was meant to have been their third motion picture). He also has composed the music for a number of television series, including Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Crime Story.

Dave Davies of The Kinks
Tue. Nov 18, 2014 at 7:30 pm
Dave Davies founded the Kinks in the early 1960s and forever changed music after he sliced up the speaker cone of a little green amp and created a revolutionary, distorted guitar tone and frenetic solo on song “You Really Got Me”. Musicologist Joe Harrington described the Kinks' influence: "You Really Got Me”, ‘All Day and All of the Night' . . . were predecessors of the whole three-chord genre ... the Kinks did a lot to help turn rock 'n' roll into rock." In 1998, writer Bill Crowley wrote, "As lead guitarist and founder of The Kinks, Dave Davies is one of the most unpredictable and original forces in rock, without whom guitar-rock styles including heavy metal and punk would have been inconceivable. A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Dave's massive guitar sounds have inspired bands from Van Halen to Green Day."
Since the early days, Dave has worked on a slew of critically acclaimed records, ranging from solo hit song “Death of a Clown”, to experimental Kinks records like “Village Green Preservation Society” and “Arthur” and classic song “Lola” in the 70s. In the 80s Dave released experimentally prescient solo work like the eponymous album titled Dave Davies or AFL1-3603 named after himself and/or the barcode symbol face cover art. His mainstream success continued in the 80s on hit Kinks albums Low Budget and State of Confusion. In the 90s he released more solo work such as Bug and the compilation Unfinished Business. His songs have been featured in films by John Carpenter and on T.V. shows like the Sopranos which used his tune “Living on a Thin Line”. His tell-all autobiographical book Kink was well received in the late 90s as well. In recent years, Dave has collaborated creatively with his sons. In 2010 he worked with son Russell Davies to create the hauntingly, beautiful rock electronica album, the Aschere Project. Mystical Journey, directed by son Martin Davies, narrates Dave's longtime interest in the paranormal, Eastern philosophies and spirituality (the film inspired Julien Temple's BBC documentary Kinkdom Kome). No matter how diverse the ambition, Dave Davies puts his heart and soul in all of his projects.
